1,000 Pears?

1,000 Pears

A close friend is pregnant. She was reading one of her books that talks about pregnancy, and on the same page it states two incongruous factoids: (1) normally, a woman’s uterus is the size and shape of an upside-down pear; and (2) during pregnancy, the uterus grows to 1,000 times it normal size.

Wait, what?

So this drawing of 100 pears is only 1/10 of the final size of my friend’s belly. I feel like I’m folding paper cranes, which I guess is appropriate: if these factoids are true, she’s going to need a lot of luck!

For Illustration Friday.

this is an extremely clever take on the subject

intriguing- and unsettling for those of us who have not yet had children

Fantastic! I want a print to put on my studio.

The pears are wonderful and the concept is very clever. Try not to worry about your friend, billions of women have survived the ordeal, lol. It does blow your mind if you think about it too much though.

So very, very cool! Love the colors, the idea, the variety. You rock.

Lots of pears end up in my wrk because I’m a pear fanatic! I also paint them to honor larger sized women :) Great job on multiple!

This IS really nice, I love the simplicity of the design, and the extra bit of learnin’ I’m sure will come in handy, 1000 times, whoa!

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!

Here’s my deconstruction of the two facts I mention above: (1) the overall size and shape of a uterus is the size and shape of a pear– yes, I buy that; and (2) the space inside the uterus, which is much smaller than a whole pear, grows to 1,000 times its normal size during pregnancy.

The phrasing of the two facts would suggest that a woman’s uterus grows to 1,000 times the size of a pear, but if you think about that, it’s pretty much impossible. It does make for a fun thing to draw, though.
